How to Fit A Handrail to A Plasterboard Wall?

Installing handrails on drywall requires special care because the drywall itself is not strong enough to withstand the tension and pressure of the handrail. Here are some installation steps and suggestions:

1. Determine where the handrail will be installed

Mark the centerline of the handrail on the wall.
Use a tape measure and level to ensure that the marked line is level and in the right position.

2. Find the wooden studs in the wall

The handrail needs to be fixed to the wooden studs in the wall because the drywall itself cannot withstand enough tension.
If you are not sure where the studs are, you can use a stud finder to locate them.
If you don't have a stud finder, you can carefully tap the wall with a sharp tool (such as a screwdriver) to find the location where the sound is solid, which is usually where the studs are.

3. Cut the drywall to expose the studs

Use a sharp knife (such as a utility knife or a cutting knife) to cut a strip about 5 cm wide near the marked handrail location.
Carefully remove the cut drywall strips, taking care not to damage the keel.
Go through the cut area and find and mark the center of the keel.

4. Install the support board (optional)

If necessary, you can install a piece of wood or plywood to increase the support area.
Fix the board to the keel, making sure it covers the cut area.
Repair the cut drywall area, you can use drywall patches or putty to fill the gap, then sand and repaint.

5. Install the handrail

Make sure the installation position of the handrail is aligned with the keel.
Use screws that are long and thick enough (recommended at least #10 screws, at least 5 cm long) to fix the handrail to the keel.
Check the firmness of the handrail to ensure that it can withstand the pressure of normal use.

6. Final inspection and adjustment

After installation, check that the handrail is firm and level.
If you find any looseness or unevenness, adjust and re-secure it in time.
Check the connection points of the handrail regularly to ensure that it is stable for long-term use.
